Srikakulam’s Paradise lost

By Uma Sudhir

Travel to Srikakulam and you would realise how proximity to the sea, the Vizag port, the coal fields, the Kolkota-Chennai National Highway and the railway line has become a curse for the people in this district. How for the last few years, they are waging a war to keep the greedy corporates at bay, to protect their own homeland from degradation. It is an unequal battle, but they won one round last week at Sompeta.

But for every Sompeta, there are several other thermal power plants coming up, on the basis of falsehoods that claim Srikakulam is all wastelands, not wetlands with rich biodiversity.

I travelled to Srikakulam to see for myself this local paradise being raped by industry, in gross violation of all norms.

What a pity that you show concern to Srikakulam People and disregard Mahabubnagar SEZ Land being forcefully taken by Andra Govt few months back
I Expected this Beautiful piece of Journalism from you since you all were from Madras Province which was a part of the Province until 1953.No guesses atleast.Show atleast some courtesy to Nizam Province People also Madam

  2. @kumar, casting aspersions is the easiest job to do … and you do it well. Kindly do not presume that in our twenty plus years of journalism, both print and tv, we have never spoken about the mahbubnagar SEZs. This was meant to be a focus on what is happening in Srikakulam and in fact, along the entire coast. Lastly, I don’t need to say this but since you are ignorant, let me clarify that Uma has never lived in `Madras’ in her life. And we atleast do not do our journalism about our home and our backyard. We believe in issues and do a honest job of it. Regards.
