Rajinikanth is once again in the news, with the music launch of `Enthiran’, said to be the most expensive film made in India. A R Rahman has scored the music for this sci-fi film, directed by Shankar and produced by Kalanidhi Maran and will release in September 2010.
It seems strange that in many ways, the rest of India actually discovered the phenomenon called Rajini only in 2007 prior to the release of `Sivaji, the Boss’. After all, they had dismissed him as a madarasi actor who made a foray into Hindi films, spoke Hindi with a heavy Madarasi accent (despite being a Maharashtrian) and did stylish stuff with his cigarettes.
The media went on an overdrive ahead of `Sivaji’, analysing in great detail what made Rajini tick. This despite the fact that Rajini is a recluse and never ever talks to the media.
It took a long, long wait and different journalistic techniques for me to get the first-ever exclusive interview with Rajini ahead of `Sivaji’. On the evening of June 14, 2007 in the lobby of Taj Banjara, Hyderabad. I need not add that it was a moment I would cherish all my life.
