Hyderabad takes you for a ride !

By T S Sudhir

The next time you board an autorickshaw in Hyderabad, get suspicious if the driver puts his hand under his seat to touch a switch. Because everytime he does that the auto meter will jump by 75 paise.

The city traffic police says 8 out of every 10 autos in Hyderabad indulge in this kind of tampering. And the number of times the drivers press the switch depends on the kind of customer : rich or poor, local or non-local, sharp or absent-minded.

Good story – but almost 75% autos are owned by cops, so its hardly any surprise…

tamper free auto meter is an utopian concept. until and unless, the ownership of autos by police personnel is broken and they be barred from owning autos, benami, no amount of policing would be able to check fleecing by auto rikhsaw drivers. see how easily the complexion of a dispute over fare is altered into something else by the autowalahs. and why the local police that stands bye hardly ever takes interest? the coded messages on the auto may be greek and latin to the commuters, but are crystal clear signals to the cops as to its lineage — perhaps which CI owns it etc.

I totally agree with shankar. Nearly 75% of autos are owned by cops. So,it’s hard to curb this menace
