Gold, going, going, gone !

By Uma Sudhir   Trading sentiments for the yellow metal turned bullish on heavy buying support, following turmoil in Libya and surging crude oil prices. While gold surged Rs. 200 to Rs. 21,420 per 10 grams on rising seasonal demand, silver rose by Rs. 1,250 to Rs. 54,450 per kg on heavy buying by stockists and industrial units, amid firm global cues. However, such a rise has hardly made any difference in the enthusiasm of Indian buyers. http://www.ndtv.com/video/player/news/gold-hits-record-rs-21-420-silver-at-31-yr-high/192958 (video of the story) Continue reading Gold, going, going, gone !

Benaam and badnaam

By Uma Sudhir Responding to Pranab Mukherjee’s call, the biggest MFI in the country, SKS Microfinance has slashed interest rate to 24 per cent and the Andhra Pradesh government said it would set up a joint working group with industry. This has happened even as a new scam has surfaced in the debate on regulation of MFIs. Benami loans, made possible by collusion of agents. With no database or checks on who is borrowing how much and for what purpose, and no regulation on multiple loans, overindebtedness is pushing the most vulnerable to the brink. Meanwhile, former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu has asked people not to repay their loans … Continue reading Benaam and badnaam

Raju gets off the tiger

By T S Sudhir Ramalinga Raju has logged himself off the CBI net. After several unsuccessful attempts to get bail, Raju’s plea on health grounds found favour with the Andhra Pradesh High court on Wednesday. This even as NIMS doctors, who have been painting a rather gloomy picture of Raju’s health status so far, now claimed his virus count was down from one crore to just 30. And that he needed to be in hospital for just another 16 weeks. Raju transformed from a suave, sophisticated corporate leader to a cheat on January 7, 2009. This even as he now claims that … Continue reading Raju gets off the tiger
